Azzedine Alaïa, the emblematic Franco-Tunisian designer known as the sculpture of fashion, died last November 18th at 77 years old. Now, the 21st edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion is preparing a posthumous tribute, joining the recognitions made by Paris and London fashion weeks.

Azzedine Alaïa turned into one of the most prominent international designers of the last decades thanks to his incredible know-how of couture and a very personal style that favoured the woman’s silhouette. After working for Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler, he opened his own atelier in the seventies and by the eighties he had already launched his eponymous line. That was the time when Alaïa supported the early career of afterwards iconic top models like Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour and, above all, Naomi Campbell, his everlasting muse, while among his clients we found the movie legend Greta Garbo.

On Friday 2nd of February at 6 p.m. the 080 Barcelona Fashion’s tribute will kick off with a talk between actress Rossy de Palma and ex Vogue editor Lisa Lovatt Smith, both personal friends of Mr. Alaïa. The two figures will recall the passionate and unique career of this designer born in Tunisia in 1940, who studied sculpture at Paris’ École des Beaux Arts and learned to sew thanks to his sister, who encouraged him to take a job copying haute couture dresses. These two elements were crucial for his style, and for the future of fashion, because, according to experts, his first prêt-à-porter collection for Charles Jourdan in the seventies stood out thanks to its “modern elegance”, bringing forward the “body conscious aesthetics” that eventually would made Azzedine Alaïa so popular.

Over time, and over many brave, bold and free collections, Azzedine Alaïa got to the top of fashion worldwide, and became object of memorable exhibitions like the one hold at New York’s Guggenheim in 2000. Tina Turner, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Cameron Diaz and his muses Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour are just some of the many celebrities that have worn amazing Alaïa dresses.

In the 080 Barcelona Fashion’s tribute we will be able to admire them once the fashion shows and the award’s ceremony are over. From 7:30 p.m. on Friday February 2nd, last day of shows, the tribute will continue with a presentation on the runway with choreographer and dancer Blanca Li featuring a selection of designs by Alaïa, the majority of which are part of actress Isabelle Adjani’s private collection.

A lavish closing for this fashion event that will bring the latest trends and the best style to Barcelona from Monday 29th of January at the amazing Sant Pau’s Art Nouveau Site.
