As the special international guest, the 22nd edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion will welcome André Leon Talley, the iconic ex editor in Vogue USA, with a career that spans over 25 years in the front row of international fashion and style after being discovered by another legend: Diana Vreeland. A unique and pioneering fashion figure who broke boundaries in the before secretive fashion world and that is currently on vogue again thanks to the documentary “The Gospel According to André”, which has been screened at the Moritz Feed Dog festival and New York’s Tribeca film festival. The film will be screened at the 080 Barceloan Fashion on Thursday 28th of June within the new 22nd edition in a session that will be topped off by a talk with him by the name of “André Leon Talley, a life in the chiffon trenches”.
.
Born in Washington in 1949 and raised in Durham, André Leon Talley discovered his passion for fashion by flipping the pages of the Vogue USA and looking at the elegant clothes that women wore in church back then. In the sixties he moved to New York, where he was discovered by Diana Vreeland, the legendary fashion editor of Vogue –and before at Harper’s Bazaar- who hired him as her assistant when she was the fashion curator of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
.
Eccentric and groundbreaking, Diana Vreeland is responsible for introducing a new look and speech at feminine fashion magazines, inventing the current role of fashion editor and with a special instinct for new talents –like Manolo Blahnik, Diane von Furstenberg, Lauren Hutton and Angelica Houston-. She encouraged André Leon Talley to search for the singularity and the difference in fashion. In 1989, André was appointed creative editor at Vogue USA, role that he used to promote emerging designers, especially, Afro-Americans.
.
His commitment to diversity in the fashion world is one of André Leon Talley’s best legacies, as well as his lush personality, always true to himself, and unique sense of style. In his latter years, he has worked side by side with Anna Wintour, the powerful current editor in chief of Vogue USA, and even inspired a film character in the movie “The devil wears Prada” based on the well-known fashion magazine.
.
The fashion documentary “The Gospel According to André”, that will be screened on Thursday 28th of June within the program of parallel activities of the 22nd edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion, is an intimate portrait of this key figure of the last decades of fashion. Director Kate Novack takes the audience in an emotional journey from André Leon Talley’s origins growing up in the racial discrimination of the Jim Crow laws, to his iconic work on the pages of Vogue and also other magazines like W and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD).
.
This fashion documentary is a must-see for anyone who wants to know more about this legend of the fashion world that will visit the 080 Barcelona Fashion and will be the center of the talk “André Leon Talley, a life in chiffon trenches”, just after the screening at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site.
